5 Reasons to Start a Podcast

Updated: Apr 5

Have you been thinking about starting a podcast? Do it!

I’m a big fan of podcasts. Whether it’s a podcast for leveling up my business or a true crime podcast, count me in! Having a podcast is a great way to reach your audience to deliver your message, in your own voice! Emails and social media don’t always show your audience your personality, podcasting lets them into your world. So you could ultimately go from being just another person online to their go-to for your niche. The key is to be authentic and transparent. People are far more likely to buy your products and services when they know, like, and trust you.

When I first heard of podcasts years ago, I only associated it with news stations and talk radio. I had no desire to listen to that. Fast forward to 2020 and starting my business, I came across an online educator that resonated with me and I binged her podcast. I was like a sponge for her content and I built the foundation of my business on a lot of the principles she taught.

In my opinion, this is what you want as a podcaster. You want your audience to binge your episodes, to enjoy and find practical use for what you have to offer. That’s why I believe it’s so beneficial to start a podcast. It’s a great way to keep your audience hanging on your every word.

Below are 5 reasons why I believe it’s a good idea to start a podcast: convenient consumption, global reach, niche targeting, low barrier to entry, and evergreen content.

Convenient Consumption

A great reason to start a podcast is that your audience can consume your content at their leisure and in a convenient way. They can pop in their earbuds and listen while they work out or cook or sometimes even work. When I started my business, I consumed tons of podcasts while I drove! Being able to get your message out to your audience so they can consume it when and where they want is a bonus!

Global Reach

The reach of your podcast is limitless! Your podcast has the potential to reach millions of people all over the world. How awesome is that? To be able to talk about something you love and reach millions, it’s a win-win.

Niche Targeting

Another great reason to start a podcast is to reach your target audience more effectively. By talking and teaching on your niche, you’re targeting the people who need to hear your message. Finding your dedicated community of listeners is essential to having a successful podcast. When you find that community, it’s like hitting the lottery! They want to consume more and more of your content and you want to give them more and more.

Low Barrier to Entry

Getting into podcasting, in a lot of cases, only takes a phone. We all have phones so we all have access to start a podcast, right? As your podcast grows, you can always invest in more equipment but to start, all you need is a phone. That fact alone makes it even more feasible to start a podcast.

Evergreen Content

Evergreen content is loosely defined as content that is always relevant regardless of the current news cycle or season. Depending on the type of podcast you choose to do, your content can continue to reach your target audience for years to come. I’ve stumbled across a podcast, enjoyed the episode I found, and then went back and listened to all the previous episodes and the message was still relevant to what I needed. That’s evergreen content!
